More and more of our patients are asking for a whiter smile. Some patients are dissatisfied with the color of their teeth, perhaps from staining caused by the use of tobacco, coffee, sugary beverages, and foods. Discoloration also can be the result of aging, injury, excessive fluoride, certain illnesses, and the use of tetracycline (an antibiotic in early childhood). Whitening can remove many discolorations and stains, but some are harder to remove than others.
Whitening is a safe and easy cosmetic procedure. Our office offers two types of whitening services. We offer our at-home custom trays that are convenient to use. Also we use the ZOOM! 2™ system, which brightens your smile up to eight shades lighter in just one hour.
At-home whitening trays are offered to our patients who want to complete their whitening process in the comfort of their own home. Impressions are taken at our office, and custom-fitted trays are made for our patients in one week. The custom-fitted whitening trays holds the bleaching gel in a close contact with the teeth and is worn one hour daily using the 22% whitening gel, We also offer our over the night 16% whitening gel to also receive results.
Whitening trays should be used for about two weeks or till sensitivity occurs ( the amount of time and the duration of the whitening can vary depending on individual needs). Patients may purchase whitening gels from our office that offer a higher concentration of bleach than otherwise found in products sold over the counter in the stores. This higher the bleach concentration delivers the faster and more advanced results will occur compared to over-the-counter bleach or whitening toothpaste.
The ADA does not recommend over-the-counter tooth bleaching products that are self-administered. Although such products may cost less, bleaching should be done only under the supervision of a dentist after an oral examination and diagnosis of the discolored teeth. Some people with certain dental conditions may not be good candidates for bleaching, such as patients with gum recession that has left them with sensitive tooth roots exposed.
Zoom! 2™ whitening is a procedures conducted conveniently at our office in just one hour. Zoom! 2™ can whiten your teeth up to eight shades. After the Zoom! 2™ process is complete, you will receive at-home custom trays that you can take with you and use anytime you need a touch-up.
How does Zoom! 2™ whitening work?
Zoom! 2™ whitening is extremely safe and does not compromise the integrity of the tooth structure in any way. Our Assistants will begin by isolating the teeth and painting a light-activated gel on the surface of the teeth. The light-activated gel is painted onto the teeth in three 15-minute sessions. The active ingredient in this gel is Hydrogen Peroxide. The Hydrogen Peroxide breaks down (with the assistance of the Zoom! 2™ lamp) to release oxygen that enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching the tooth. After the procedure fluoride is administered for five minutes to complete the process.
Warning: Not everyone is an ideal candidate for whitening. If you have any of the following, please let us know so that we may offer effective alternative solutions.
- Large composite restorations or crowns: If you choose to whiten, you may need to replace any restoration that does not match after the whitening procedure. Large composite restorations or crowns will not whiten.
- Severe tetracycline staining
- Existing periodontal disease: Any type of periodontal disease should be addressed prior to cosmetic bleaching.
- Pregnant or lactating patients
- Extreme tooth sensitivity: If you have extremely sensitive teeth, they may become irritated by the ingredients used during the whitening process. We highly recommend the use of a sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne™ the week before and after whitening to help decrease any resulting sensitivity.
